FIRST - Fireworks Incident Research Safety Team

The training offered by F.I.R.S.T. will consist of 3 days at the Fire Service College, Moreton-in-Marsh and will be structured as follows:

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Any delegate attending and completing this course will be awarded a massive 22 Hours CPD

There are three fundamental reasons for carrying out CPD:

- to demonstrate that existing knowledge and skills are being regularly refreshed, in order to maintain existing competency

- to acquire new knowledge and develop more skills necessary in order to keep up with developments in fire engineering

- to acquire new underpinning knowledge and skills that may be necessary for career development

In addition to this any delegate who is a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers will receive a 10% discount on course costs.


Day 1 – Introduction

· Firework components and construction
· Pracical guidance on enforcement
· The chemistry of explosions
· Pyrotechnics and stage effects
· Professional fireworks displays and demonstration of firework categories


DAY 2 - OPERATIONAL PREPAREDNESS

· Operational risk assessment
· Dealing with disaster
· Firework misuse
· Demonstration of firework devices and IED's
· Anti-terrorist branch input
· Forensic recovery - best practice in the recovery of evidence from bomb scenes



DAY 3 - INCIDENT MANAGEMENT

· Practical exercises and scenarios
· Demonstration of misuse
· Bomb disposal
· Cordons






The course will be taught and managed by officers from the F.I.R.S.T., members of the Military Bomb Disposal Service, Anti-terrorist Branch officers and representatives from the fireworks industry.

The course broadly covers all aspects of fireworks issues and equips nominated officers with the skills to be able to tackle most aspects of pyrotechnics misuse in their areas.
